The Ministry of Human and Minority Rights and Social Dialogue said on May 18 that it was necessary to advance the legal framework where gender based violence and femicide were concerned as well as the enforcement of existing laws.
In a statement on the National Day of Remembrance of Female Victims of Violence which was established in 2017, the Ministry said that it would endorse the better application of rules for the purpose of protecting and raising the quality of life for women and girls in Serbia within its jurisdiction.
It added that it would continue to contribute to the battle against the culture of violence, while simultaneously affirming the values of tolerance, dialogue and mutual respect.
Meanwhile, the Center for Investigative Journalism of Serbia (CINS) released a statement on May 18 that of the 117 cases of femicide that reached court between 2014 and 2022, more than more than half were not designated as aggravated murder, allowing the culprits to get off with more lenient sentences.
