Legally banned corporal punishment of children, strengthening mechanisms which ensure protection of children against violence in all types of environments, strengthening inclusion in education, and improving the entire legal framework relating children’s rights are some of the recommendations Serbia has endorsed in the recently completed process of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR).

“Of particular importance is the adoption of the recommendations relating to inclusion and prohibition of discrimination both in education and elsewhere, which demonstrate commitment to ensuring that all children have quality education and all services, including children in vulnerable situations such as Roma children, children who are refugees and migrants, and children with disabilities,” organization Save the Children, together with the Network of Organizations for Children of Serbia (MODS) and the Child Rights Center said on May 23.

The UPR, a mechanism under the auspices of the UN Human Rights Council, is a state-led and peer-review process involving the review of the human rights records and recommendations for improvements. UPR operates on a five-year cycle. This was the fourth UPR for Serbia.
