A group of intellectuals on Nov. 7 presented a manifesto titled ProGlas, with the aim to encourage citizens to change the reality in Serbia, go to the polls and stop an outburst of crime and corruption in the society.
Actress Svetlana Bojkovic read the manifesto, which states that Serbia has become a country of humiliated and privatized institutions, in the shadow of crime merged with governing structures and with corruption which is becoming a lifestyle.
“We are again facing stalemate of isolation. It is our unequivocal belief that the time we live in requires from all responsible and worried citizens to face the moment, make clear decisions and be ready not only to witness the necessary turns, but also to be part of them,” it is said in the manifesto. It adds that it is necessary “to restore democracy, legal and political institutions, the spirit of freedom, and discussions with critical views in which people can participate without fearing consequences.”
A member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, Vladimir Kostic, said that the group of worried citizens had been formed spontaneously and that they expected no messianism. Judge Miodrag Majic said that it was a heterogeneous group of people of various vocations and age, but what they had in common was demonstration of certain courage to speak about the topics which the others had kept quiet about.
The manifesto ProGlas has been backed by Ljubomir Simovic, Vladimir Kostic, Ivanka Popovic, Miodrag Majic, Miodrag Jovanovic, Dragan Bjelogrlic, Vladica Cvetkovic, Svetlana Bojkovic, Gojko Bozovic, Srdan Golubovic, Biljana Stepanovic, Filip Ejdus, Tamara Dzamonja Ignjatovic, Miodrag Jovanovic, and retired journalist Petar Peca Popovic. The group said it would organize forums across Serbia in the coming days.
