Hungarian Minister: Budapest to Vote Against U.N. Srebrenica Resolution

Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto said in Budapest, on May 15, that Hungary would vote against a draft resolution to promote the remembrance of genocide in Srebrenica before the U.N. General Assembly.

Szijjarto said at a press conference following a meeting with President of Republika Srpska Milorad Dodik that the resolution "intentionally or unintentionally demonizes the entire Serbian people with regard to the tragedy in Srebrenica." The Hungarian minister warned that the resolution on Srebrenica "could undermine the stable situation and understanding among the peoples in Bosnia and Herzegovina".

"Bosnia and Herzegovina has made serious progress on the path to the European Union. A decision was made in March that negotiations on the country’s EU accession should begin. It is important for all Bosnia’s entities and peoples to contribute," Szijjarto said.

The president of the Bosnian Serb cautioned that a U.N. resolution on Srebrenica would  paralyze and destabilize relations in Bosnia and Herzegovina, thanking Hungary for a decision to vote against it. "Germany sponsoring this resolution is very controversial, too," Dodik said, recalling that the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina has not made any decision regarding the resolution, but only a unilateral initiative for its adoption had been launched by Bosniac representatives.
