Djordje Stankovic, a candidate for Mayor of Nis nominated by the We Choose Nis coalition said on May 29 that the Serbian Progressive Party’s chapter in Serbia’s third largest city had collapsed due to a series of corruption scandals, and that most of the Nis citizens would certainly vote to change the city government.

Stankovic said in a comment for BETA that Progressive mayors had not make a single positive change to improve the quality of life in Nis. When asked why he believed that change in Serbia would start in his city, Stankovic explained that southerners were known for their brave character, and that the Progressive government in Nis was the worst in Serbia.

"In the past three terms, the city government has been involved in corruption and concerned with commissions only. Foreign investors did not come, and most of the workpeople receive a median salary worth RSD 56,000. You cannot make ends meet on current wages, as the cost of the consumer basket alone is RSD80,000, and the rent for a 50-square-meter apartment is EUR350," Stankovic specified, promising that in its first year, the new government would uncover all corrupt deals made by the Progressives.
