Putin Congratulates Statehood Day to Vucic: Serbian-Russian Cooperation Developing Dynamically

An expert on Russian affairs in the Atlantic Council and former U.S. diplomat, Daniel Fried, has said that an alliance between Serbia and Russia would not help the Serbian people.

In an interview with the Voice of America, Fried said he did not know how the idea of Serbia becoming a "keychain" of Russia or being under Russian control or part of Putin's system would help Serbia or its people.

According to him, the main point is for Serbia to realize its European future, rather than the future of one of Moscow's friends, who have a tendency not to be particularly successful.

Fried said he was not talking about Serbia becoming an ally to the United States, because maybe the memories of the war in Kosovo were too fresh for that, but asked why Serbia, if it did not want to buy U.S. military equipment, did not buy French equipment, as relations with that country were fine.

The Voice of America recalls that in late July Russia handed the Serbian army ten armored reconnaissance vehicles, which Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic claims were received as a gift.

Daniel Fried underscores that Russian military equipment, as outdated as it may be, could disrupt the balance in an already unstable region.

It aims to incite anti-western sentiments in Serbia, the results of which are perfectly predictable. Russian allies usually end up in poverty, corruption is at a higher level, they have a weaker rule of law and are less integrated into the global communities than the countries aiming to join the EU, Fried told the VOA.
