Metropolitan Porfirije Elected New Patriarch of Serbian Orthodox Church

The Metropolitan of Zagreb and Ljubljana Porfirije was elected new patriarch of the Serbian Orthodox Church on Feb. 18, the Church has announced.

Porfirije was elected during the Assembly at the Church of St. Sava in Belgrade. His predecessor, Patriarch Irinej, deceased on Nov. 19 last year, at the age of 91, from the consequences of the coronavirus infection.

The enthronement of the new patriarch will be held at the Congregational Church in Belgrade and, when the Synod of the Serbian Orthodox Church sets the date, in the Pec Patriarchy.

Porfirije was born as Prvoslav Peric on July 22, 1961, in Becej. He graduated from the Faculty of Theology in Belgrade in 1986, and has obtained the masters' degree at the Faculty of Theology in Athens.

In July 2008, he was elected chairman of the Council of the Republic Broadcasting Agency. He was also the military bishop from 2010 to 2011, and then the coordinator for cooperation between the Serbian Orthodox Church and the Army of Serbia. In May 2014, he was elected to the post of metropolitan of Zagreb and Ljubljana.
