Serbian Orthodox Church Patriarch Irinej died on Nov. 20 at the age of 90 from the coronavirus which he had probably contracted while attending the funeral of Metropolitan Amfilohije in Montenegro, who had also died from the coronavirus. The Serbian authorities, led by Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, invested a lot of effort in using the patriarch’s death as an occasion for demonstrating a sort of unity of the church and the state. The Church has for decades been very popular among Serbian citizens, which motivates the political leadership to build a good relationship with it and use it to score political points with voters.
