Zdravko Ponos: A General in Politics

The vice-president of the People's Party, Zdravko Ponos, stated on Aug. 5 that the case of the crime group of Veljko Belivuk was "a mess" made by Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, which is accelerating his demise, and that the Serbian Progressive Party's voters had started to doubt the president's explanations that "insult their intelligence."

"Vucic is aware of this and that is why he has launched a frantic campaign of justification and diverting of attention. This regime is contaminated in the context of security, it could be subjected to blackmail from any side and, as such, it represents an extreme risk to the country's national security," Ponos said in an interview to the Vreme weekly.

Ponos pointed out that he had no doubt that the crime group of Veljko Belivuk was operationally subordinated to the very helm of the authorities in Serbia, as a unit for solving problems in the streets, at sports stadiums, during elections or for renting to friends and, in return, they "enjoyed a privileged position in the narcotics business and access to various resources of the state."
