The general manager and editor-in-chief of publishing house Clio, Zoran Hamovic, on Oct. 26 said that Serbia was in the bottom of the media literacy ranking as it placed 29th in Europe by annual Media Literacy Index.

The index assesses the resilience potential to fake news in 35 European countries, using indicators for media freedom, education and trust in people.

“However, media literacy has been slowly gaining a certain position in the society and there have been an increasing number of people and professions interested in improvements to the media landscape,” Hamovic told BETA.

Hamovic also said that the relevant ministries had their agendas and programs for acquiring know-how and affirmation of media literacy.

“What is important is that there is more integrity between the ministries and media outlets, because in Serbia, the media landscape is not recognized as ‘a creative environment’ and has been narrowed down to the job which is related to journalism and false news and there is no distinction between false and true news,” Hamovic specified.
