The People’s Party leader, Vuk Jeremic, said on Dec. 14 that the formation of new authorities, particularly in Belgrade, would depend on his party, and that it would be the most pleasant surprise in the upcoming elections.

“We are a guarantee that the system will change in Belgrade. When I say ‘change of system’, I don’t think of change of government only in terms of the people running the capital, but rather the approach to running it. Belgrade can no longer be seen as party spoils,” Jeremic said in an interview with the Nova paper.

Jeremic added that Belgrade will be no longer run the way the former mayors, Dragan Djilas and Aleksandar Sapic, did, and that an agreement on new city authorities should mean more than the distribution of city enterprises.

Speaking about the Franco-German plan and the Kosovo issue, Jeremic said that the plan should be dismissed first, and that after that a pro-active stance should be taken, primarily to Western partners, offering a proposal as to how to stabilize political relations, while keeping economic ties intact. “The relationship between the European Union and Serbia needs to be redefined.  Serbia should not pretend to be moving forward to the Union anymore, since we were explicitly presented with an unacceptable condition - to recognize Kosovo’s independence,” Jeremic explained.
