Serbian Progressive Party MP Vladimir Djukanovic has said that Germany is the strongest European power, that it has "never needed lithium more" and that three years ago it tried to obstruct the Jadar Project and stop Serbia's development.

In an op-ed for the July 22 issue of daily Politika, Djukanovic said that it was key for the Germans not to let lithium fall into Chinese or Russian hands, while talk of environmental protection had been just a cover.

"The moment they realized Serbian lithium would not fall into Chinese or Russian hands, rather that only Serbia would handle and decide how much of the raw material it would export and to whom, i.e. how it would process it and get final products from it, obstructions ceased," writes Djukanovic.

In his words, the Serbian opposition is inconsistent because "up until yesterday it swore on" German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, whereas after the chancellor's visit to Belgrade it is "throwing stones at him."

He added that the moment of signing of the agreement with Scholz thoroughly changed Serbia and that it was a watershed moment for the future and development of the country.

A memorandum of understanding on the strategic partnership between Serbia and the EU in the area of sustainable raw materials, battery value chains and electric vehicles was signed in Belgrade on July 19. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz attended a strategic raw materials summit and the signing of the memorandum.
