Serbia’s Prime Minister Milos Vucevic said on Aug. 23 that, over the next several days, the government will announce measures for ensuring basic foodstuffs are more fairly priced, in contrast to the current situation where they are often more expensive than in EU countries.
To discuss the issue, Vucevic had his first sit-down with the representatives of Serbia’s major domestic and foreign food retailers, the Serbian Chamber of Commerce and relevant ministers on Aug. 22.
“I think we’ll have something concrete to announce over the next ten or so days and [that] the public will feel fairer treatment,” the prime minister told Prva TV.
He went on to stress that the government cannot interfere in the operation of said retailers because the nine companies he met with alone employ over 50,000 people and are entitled to a profit.
“But let’s see why certain products are more expensive here than in other countries. I think we will end up having good measures,” Vucevic concluded, expressing his hope that an agreement on pricing with said retail chains will be reached.
