Kosovo Interior Minister Xhelal Svecla said on Sept. 7 that the Brnjak and Merdare administrative crossings, which closed during the night of Sept. 6 and 7, had opened.
Svecla said the Ministry of Internal Affairs had decided to open the crossings for traffic after learning that "extremist groups" had removed their roadblocks in Serbian territory.
The Blockade Council of Serbia called for the blockade after Kosovo police shut down five offices housing what they called "parallel municipal structures" in northern Kosovo for the alleged forging of documents. The Aug. 30 police operation closed four municipal offices in Kosovska Mitrovica, Leposavic, Zubin Potok and Zvecan, along with the offices of the Mitrovica District.
The international community has criticized the Kosovo government for this and other steps taken in northern Kosovo and urged it to refrain from "actions that could provoke tension." After warning about the blockade, Kosovo institutions cautioned citizens to avoid traveling through Serbia proper.
