In an Oct. 13 evening statement, Serbian National Assembly Speaker Ana Brnabic said that the recent parliamentary debate on banning lithium excavation showed that the only person the opposition dare not face is President Aleksandar Vucic.

Speaking for Pink TV, Brnabic claimed that the opposition was given everything they asked for – a sitting devoted to the issue and an authorized advocate – all of which would have been inconceivable during the previous regime’s reign.

“At the sitting, I fought with all my heart because I believe [lithium mining] is advantageous for Serbia. And if it isn’t, there are institutions and laws to explain what happens when something is bad for the environment,” Brnabic said.

In her opinion, should Serbia ban lithium and boron mining it would prove worse than a “banana state.”

The speaker went on to call Serbia’s environmental activists frauds – because they travel by plane and car – and insisted that their only ideology is arguing against everything Aleksandar Vucic says, with the ultimate goal of toppling the president.
