Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dacic on Nov. 19 said that arrests during and after the protest rally in Novi Sad on Nov. 5 were made based on CCTV footage and documentation for each individual case.
Speaking to TV Pink, Dacic said that the videos clearly showed people throwing stones at the Novi Sad City Hall and police officers, stressing that no one had been arrested without evidence.
“Initially, all of the arrested used their right to silence, but once faced with evidence and CCTV footage, they have started revealing various things. Some have gone as far as to blame it on the opposition, as if someone had provided them with stones saying: ‘Let’s see now whether you are true opposition,’” Dacic said.
He also said that once the issue was brought up in the Serbian Parliament, the regime would come under an avalanche of attacks, adding he was sure that the initiative for confidence vote in Prime Minister Milos Vucevic would be a total failure. “It has no chance of success. It will be a political fight. But, a debate will also reveal whether they, while in power, were held accountable and to what extent for some accidents that happened during their term in office,” Dacic said.
The interior minister also said that the ongoing investigation into the Nov. 1 accident in Novi Sad, when an outside concrete canopy at the city Railway Station collapsed killing 15 people, would be thorough and establish who was responsible for the tragedy.
He also said that the investigation was complicated, adding that forensic experts had to give their opinion of what had caused the tragedy, while the Prosecutor’s office should establish any potential wrongdoing or omission as well as who was to be held responsible.
