Independent MP Sonja Pernat said on Nov. 28 that an increase in violence among youth and police brutality toward citizens indicated a deep crisis of society.
She added that a child died as a result of violence among minors in Leskovac while in Novi Sad police beat an old man who was arrested at a blockade of the city's court and prosecutor's office building.
"Police inflicted serious injuries on him which required surgery, and a body part was removed. The policemen who committed this violence are free. These two cases are not isolated incidents, but reflect a society in which aggression and violence have become all pervasive. When children resort to lethal violence, and those who are supposed to protect citizens use brutal force, it is clear that there is a serious problem in society," Pernat said.
She said that it was time for urgent changes of the value system, education and how institutions functioned. "A society that does not solve the causes of violence risks being completely torn apart by it. The people must be aware of this," Pernat said in a statement.
