Following a meeting with Jose Fernandez, the U.S. Department of State under secretary for economic growth, energy and the environment, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has called the discussion “open, honest and difficult.”

“We spoke about important bilateral issues in cooperation between Serbia and the U.S., particularly the energy sector,” Vucic wrote in a Jan. 2 post on Instagram. According to him, the possible sanctions against NIS “were a topic of its own.”

“I’ll be able to disclose the full details within a few days,” Vucic stated, adding that “there is certainly not much good news for the people of Serbia, but that the country “will maintain its stability and the security of its power supply.”

Ahead of the sit-down, Vucic told Pink TV that he “was told” that one of the topics of discussion “would be the Serbian Oil Industry,” i.e. NIS. As 2024 drew to a close, Vucic announced that he had been told that NIS would face U.S. sanctions, since the company has been majority-owned by Russia since 2008.
