Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Djuric on Jan. 21 said that the second tenure of Donald Trump as the president of the United States was good news for Serbia and the region as a whole.
The day after the inauguration, Djuric said that Trump was well conversant with the region, adding that “his stand on Serbia is not burdened with the prejudice from the ‘90s.”
Noting that Serbia was not among the US’ foreign policy priorities, Djuric said that Belgrade was now being focused on building direct communication with the new US administration.
“We are focused on building great direct communication with the new US administration regarding our bilateral relations and would like to welcome members of the new administration in Belgrade,” Djuric told TV Happy.
The Serbian foreign minister congratulated Marco Rubio on his appointment as US secretary of state. Djuric added he would send a letter to Rubio on Jan. 21, expressing Serbia’s desire to further develop and strengthen cooperation with Washington and also to welcome President Trump and the secretary of state in Belgrade.
Commenting on media speculations that a potential meeting between President Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin could take place in Belgrade, Djuric said that “Serbia is uniquely positioned to be the host of the potential meeting.”
