The schools that have gone on strike by completely suspending classes, in nine cities and municipalities in Serbia, have formed an Association of Schools on Strike and will take joint action in the coming period, independently of unions, the Cacak Education Union - one of the new Association's founders - announced on Jan. 29.
The Association of Schools on Strike includes 95 schools in Cacak, Uzice, Cajetina, Pozega, Ivanjica, Gornji Milanovac, Topola, Kraljevo, and Belgrade, where classes have been completely suspended. According to the Cacak Education Union's data, more than 5,000 education workers are on strike in those schools.
The Association has presented the Serbian government with four demands, the first being the fulfillment of all the demands of protesting students. The second demand is the prosecution of all individuals who jeopardize the safety of school and university students and professors, while the third is fulfillment of all obligations the government took on by signing a protocol in October 2023. The fourth demand is the amending of the law on elementary and high school and the Law on Strike, regarding education workers' right to complete suspension of work, whereby these laws would be harmonized with the Serbian Constitution and international conventions.
