European Parliament MP Vladimir Prebilic has extended his support to student protesters in Serbia whom he urged to be strong, remain connected and believe in the power of community and know that their voice has echoed beyond Serbia’s borders.
“You have shown Europe and the world that young people are not merely passive observers, but active creators of society. The massive support from teachers, scientists and citizens from all around Serbia and farther confirms the legitimacy of your demands,” the Slovenian MEP said in a letter that he handed BETA.
He added that as a university professor and MEP and supporter of democracy, transparency and justice, “I express my full solidarity with these brave students, who took to the streets and perservered in fighting for democracy, the political responsibility of those in power and true changes leading toward a society that has a future in the European community of nations.”
He stressed that at this time any cooperation with the Serbian authorities was unacceptable. “Because to me as a politician defending European values they represent an unacceptable departure from the values that the EU is built on,” the Green MEP said.
No country, Prebilic said, can advance on the road of European integration without a government that listens to its people, respects their rights and consistently supports democratic principles.
