Tonino Picula, the rapporteur for Serbia before the European Parliament, said in Belgrade on Feb. 24 that Serbia should take serious steps to show its strategic orientation toward the European Union and that it should communicate about the EU objectively and unambiguously.

In a meeting with Serbian EU Integration Minister Tanja Miscevic, Picula said that "much is still lacking in critical areas, like the rule of law, freedom of the media, the election framework, the persistence of widespread corruption in many areas and public administration reform," the Serbian ministry quoted him as saying.

Picula condemned the unsubstantiated accusations against the EU and its member states of involvement in the organization of ongoing university student-led protests in Serbia.

The EP's rapporteur for Serbia stressed the EP's readiness to support re-activating political and democratic processes related to Serbia's bid to join the EU "using existing tools and initiatives supporting democracy."

Miscevic underscored that membership in the EU was a key foreign-policy priority for Serbia and that "Serbia is ready to take advantage of the new enlargement momentum by meeting its accession obligations."

Picula also met with Elvira Kovac, head of the Committee on EU integration in the Serbian parliament, and discussed the draft of his report on Serbia, which is in the process of adoption before the EP, and the alignment of Serbia's foreign policy with the EU's.
