Should altercations occur during the upcoming June 28 university student protest rally in Belgrade, the police will have to intervene, Interior Minister Ivica Dacic said on June 18.

Dacic went on to claim it is “hypocritical” that anyone is bothered by the pro-regime “assembly” in downtown Belgrade’s Pioneers Park – referring to the camp which has been occupying the public space for months now – but not by the “99 percent” of other gatherings, which have occurred unregistered.

“Interestingly, the [ongoing university professor] rally in front of the Cabinet Headquarters has been registered,” he added regarding the protest which has been blocking a major capital intersection for ten days and counting. “So tents and the like are ok in front of the Cabinet Headquarters, but not in Pioneers Park,” Dacic told Pink TV.

The minister concluded by calling on the public to avoid conflicts and police intervention “because that isn’t good for [the police], the public, or society as a whole.”
