According to Cardinal Ladislav Nemet, the Roman Catholic archbishop of Belgrade, Serbia’s refusal to recognize Kosovo as an independent state plays an important role in determining the Vatican’s policy.
Asked whether Pope Leo will adhere to his predecessor’s stance of not recognizing Kosovo, Nemet
told the latest edition of the Nedeljnik weekly that “there are no signs [this policy] will change.”
“Kosovo did not achieve statehood the usual way. Its origin is outside international political relations. Unilaterally declared independence certainly isn’t a good sign. Many countries are dealing with long-standing issues. That is why [independence] must be achieved through dialogue. I believe that is crucial to the Holy See,” the cardinal concluded.
