The morning of June 30 has seen traffic in Belgrade slowly normalizing after roadblocks sprang up across the city the night before, in response to the arrests of several university students following the capital’s massive June 28 protest rally. Throughout the country, about 50 barricades were erected in over 20 cities and municipalities.
Some Belgrade districts remain partially blocked, with the suburbs having particular trouble commuting to and from downtown.
Meanwhile, the media are reporting that students and members of the general public blocking the streets are being taken into police custody.
The barricades are a direct response to arrests of eight individuals “suspected of plotting against Serbia’s constitutional order and security” on the heels of the St. Vitus Day protest rally, per a warrant issued by the Belgrade’s Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office.
