Pavle Grbovic (BETAPHOTO/MILAN ILIC)
President of the Free Citizens’ Movement Pavle Grbovic said on Oct. 25 that the European Parliament’s resolution on the situation in Serbia had restored citizens’ trust in the European Union, but that they now expected the European Commission to react.
Grbovic met with European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos at the congress of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe in Brussels, which was attended by leaders of liberal parties from across Europe, members of the European Parliament, and representatives of the European Commission.
“The role of the European Union is of key importance, because the moment the regime in Serbia feels Europe is no longer as interested as it was will be the moment they destroy everything that was previously accomplished,” said Grbovic, adding that there was momentum to speed up Serbia’s accession to Europe, but that the opportunity would not be open forever.
The European Parliament adopted on Oct. 22 a resolution that supports the right of Serbian students and citizens to peaceful protests, condemns the wave of state-sponsored violence, intimidation, and indiscriminate arrests, warning that the Serbian leadership was politically responsible for the escalation of repression, the normalization of violence, and the weakening of democratic institutions in the country.
