Marko Djuric (BETAPHOTO/MINISTARSTVO SPOLJNIH POSLOVA SRBIJE)

Serbian Foreign Minister Mako Djuric, who is also a member of the government’s Energy Stability Team, told the RTS public service on Nov. 24 that, with regards to fuel availability, the Serbian public can rest easy because the country was well prepared for the U.S. sanctions against Naftna Industrija Srbije (NIS), Serbia’s multinational oil and gas company.

“Serbia was well prepared and has been communicating fairly and transparently and continues to transparently inform its public [of the situation]. We are awaiting information on new transactions. The silence is difficult, the talks are taking place at a sensitive geopolitical time,” said Djuric.

The minister stated that the United States has its reasons for wanting to wean Europe off Russian fuels but that he would rather not attempt to explain this motivation himself.

“It’s in our interest for NIS to continue operating,” Djuric concluded, adding that further negotiations await.
