Serbian Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabic said on Feb. 1 that the newly-adopted amendments to several judicial laws – as proposed by ruling Serbian Progressive Party MP Ugljesa Mrdic – will be sent to the Venice Commission for a “post factum” analysis.

In an evening guest appearance on Pink TV, Brnabic opined that the amendments to six laws pertaining to the country’s prosecutor’s offices, judges, and public officials in general “strengthen the autonomy of the prosecutor’s office” and that Mrdic and Justice Minister Nenad Vujic “did an excellent job.” The speaker, however, did express her regret that none of the changes were first submitted for public discussion, a fact she said President Aleksandar Vucic also criticized.

With regards to the country’s upcoming early elections, Brnabic claimed that “foreigners are pushing the opposition” to run on a united ticket.

“The destruction of Serbia which the victory of this ticket would cause isn’t enough, rather the victory itself would mean the utmost weakening of Serbia, but then the victory would lead to additional collapse because then Pandora’s Box would open and they wouldn’t be able to agree on a single thing, which would further lead to civil conflict and the blocking of all institutions,” Brnabic stated.
