The General Staff of the Serbian Armed Forces convened in Belgrade on Feb. 13 to review the current security situation in the region, assessing that a meeting held between chiefs of staff of two NATO countries, Croatia and Albania, and Pristina representatives posed a serious security challenge, which “is clearly directed against Serbia.”
The participants said that this situation heightened the need for the Serbian Armed Forces to continue rapidly strengthening their defense capabilities so as to remain “a powerful deterrent factor,” says a release from the Defense Ministry.
The intensified activities of Albania, Croatia, and Pristina aimed at strengthening their military alliance were assessed as a serious violation of U.N. Security Council Resolution 1244 and the Kumanovo Military Technical Agreement, according to the statement.
“In light of these events, concrete measures and tasks have been defined for monitoring developments in the security domain and ensuring that the Serbian Armed Forces are prepared to respond promptly to protect citizens and the national interests of the Republic of Serbia,” according to the release. It also said that the Serbian Armed Forces remained committed to maintaining peace and stability in the region, while continuing to strengthen their deterrence capabilities against potential military threats.
