This World Day of Social Justice sees Serbian citizens facing even greater economic pressure and social insecurity, which has reached boiling point, the A 11 Initiative has said.
"The statistics that describe the socioeconomic situation in Serbia are still dismaying. According to the latest data, every fifth citizen is officially at risk of poverty, while 45 percent of citizens admit that they face some difficulty making ends meet," the organization said in a statement.
It added that over 15 percent of citizens admitted to not being able to afford meat or fish every other day, according to the Republic Bureau of Statistics' information for 2023. While statistics show that the average wage in Serbia is rising, this does not reflect in any way the position of the average citizen for whom reality is much bleaker.
"The minimum consumer basket in Serbia, according to the latest information is RSD54,565, which even those who actually earn the average wage cannot afford," the Initiative said.
