Tensions Grow in Montenegro Following Arrest of Priests: Relations with Serbia an Important Link

The arrest of Bishop Joanikije of Budimlje and Niksic and eight priests of the Serbian Orthodox Church for leading a procession despite a ban on gatherings imposed earlier to contain the spread of coronavirus has put additional strain on relations between Serbia and Montenegro. For the time being, it is just more strongly-worded exchanges, largely through the media, that echo the tension between the two neighbors. The impression is, however, that the Montenegrin and Serbian presidents, Milo Djukanovic and Aleksandar Vucic, have the situation under control, while trying to politically capitalize on it as much as they possibly can without straining the relations any further.
