Interior Minister Nebojsa Stefanovic has said that, contrary to false reports, there are currently 6,000 migrants in Serbia at this time and and added that all of Serbia's institutions are ready to react and protect the border and security of citizens in the event of a major migratory wave.
"Serbia will not be a parking lot for migrants nor will anyone send back migrants from the EU and have hundreds of thousands of migrants settle in Serbia. This has been revealed to be an absolute lie during the past three years that we have been listening to these stories just as it is a complete lie today. Everyone stubbornly spreading these utter concoctions is deceiving citizens in an attempt to score tiny political points," Stefanovic said.
According to a Serbian Interior Ministry statement, the minister recalled that both as prime minister and now president Aleksandar Vucic had always stressed that every measure should be taken to protect the border and citizens of Serbia, but that as a country Serbia needed to employ a humane approach to people, for whom Serbia is a temporary stop in their flight from wars and poverty.
The minister recalled that migrants in Serbia mostly enter the country through North Macedonia after arriving in Greece, and from Bulgaria but that they also return to their home countries.
