Montenegrin President Milo Djukanovic has said that he has no communication or business relation with his Serbian counterpart Aleksandar Vucic and dismissed the allegations that the EU has let him go “down the drain.”

In an interview to BETA, Djukanovic said that Vucic had not called him or asked for a meeting when he had attended the funeral of Metropolitan Bishop of Montenegro and the Littoral, Amfilohije, in Podgorica, adding he viewed Vucic’s visit to Montenegro as a private matter. “When I travel to Belgrade for personal matters, I do not call any of my colleagues who are Serbian state officials,” he specified.

Commenting on Vucic’s statement that he “is horrified with the anti-Serb campaign in Montenegro,” Djukanovic said that such claims hardly deserved any comment.

“Take a look at daily articles in the Serbian press, including reports of analytical centers which have dealt with media outlets in the region, and you will see that they have registered several tens of thousands of articles with the same tone, a hostile message against Montenegro and an uncovered need to interfere not only in the media, but also in the internal political life, so in this context to speak about the anti-Serb campaign in Montenegro, I believe is pointless,” Djukanovic stressed.

He also dismissed the assessments that the international community had let him go “down the drain.” “For someone to let another one go down the drain, that someone should have previously helped the other one keep his head above water. No one has ever helped Montenegro or me personally to keep our heads above water. To the contrary. We shall only recall the referendum. Have you recognized anyone from the international community, which is now our partner, who helped us back then? No,” Djukanovic said.
