Epidemiologist Predrag Kon called on Jan. 4 hesitating to get vaccinated against COVID-19 “the worst that can happen,” as it may hinder the exit from the epidemic.

Kon stated for the RTS public service that the vaccine, once in Serbia, has to be put to use immediately.

“There’s no time to procrastinate. I’m surprised that what has been delivered hasn’t been used up by now. Every day matters and everything that comes in should be used,” the national COVID-19 Crisis Headquarters’ member said.

“To prevent epidemic waves like we’ve had, we have to have 60 percent [of the population] immune, and if we really want to suppress the virus, we have to have more than 80 percent immune, which entails the vaccination of 3 million or more people,” Kon said.

According to him, now that there is such a weapon as the vaccine to fight the virus, it is a matter of days before the epidemiological situation becomes better. He added, however, that he expects the number of the newly infected to rise after the Orthodox Christmas, celebrated on Jan. 7, especially in Belgrade.

Commenting on his New Years’ wish that the Crisis Headquarters be dismissed as soon as possible, he said that the body had done “all that mattered,” adding that it will need to exist for at least another six months.
