A Serbian political analyst, Djordje Vukadinovic, said on Jan.13 that the government and the opposition had until February or early March to start a dialogue on the requirements of a free and fair vote.

Vukadinovic said for BETA that the dialogue should be ended by May or June at the latest, i.e. nine months ahead of elections. According to Vukadinovic, when the dialogue ends matters more than when it begins, because there should be enough time to implement what has been agreed.

"It's important to have a result rather than an early start. I think the dialogue should start as soon as possible, but not just to go through the motions. It should achieve something, and that's why the end-date is so important," Vukadinovic explained.

The political expert said that the country didn't need a dialogue similar to that held in 2019, as it left much to be desired, and was a mere "media and political event."
