Head of the World Health Organization (WHO) Office in Serbia Marijan Ivanusa said on Jan. 13 that the epidemiological situation was better, but that the number of people infected with the coronavirus was still very high.

Ivanusa said in an interview with the Serbian Broadcasting Corporation (RTS) he was afraid that an end to the pandemic was very far away, adding that immunization had only just began, but that the very existence of a vaccine raised hopes.

"Some 50 states had started the vaccinations. The number of vaccines per 100 persons is the highest in Israel, but in Spain it's only one," Ivanusa said.

According to him, good collective immunity would require 60 to 79 percent of the population to be vaccinated. "I can't say if this will stay the same or not - a new strain of virus appeared in the United Kingdom, and it's very easy to transmit, which is why more extensive immunization might be required," Ivanusa said.
