European Parliament’s Rapporteur for Serbia Vladimir Bilcik has said that MEPs are ready to immediately start mediating the dialogue between the authorities and the opposition in Serbia.
“We were ready last year, we are ready to start cooperation with the new cabinet and we have sent a note to Parliament speaker Ivica Dacic. We have been ready to cooperate with the National Assembly for a few weeks now and we can start any time,” Bilcik told TV N1 in the evening on Jan. 18.
He also said it was necessary to start immediately so that certain results could be achieved before the elections in April 2022.
“Important talks have already been held by Chair of the European Parliament Foreign Affairs Committee David McAllister and Serbian Parliament speaker Ivica Dacic and they agreed to meet again after Christmas in January. I hope that they will meet shortly, in a few days,” Bilcik said.
Bilcik stressed that “media freedoms” were crucial.” “Threats to journalists are not acceptable, we shall look into ways on how to improve conditions for the work of journalists. Any threat to journalists represents an extremely serious issue and we should be following that closely,” the EP rapporteur said.
