People’s Party: Opposition Must Reach Agreement

Stefan Jovanovic, the general secretary of the People’s Party, has said that a unified opposition is predicated on an agreement between the three key oppositional parties: the People’s Party, the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) and the Democratic Party (DP). In his opinion, should these three parties agree to form a bloc, the citizens of Serbia would support them, seeing it a sign that the opposition is finally ready to be taken seriously.

“All other truly oppositional parties are also welcome [to join us], since we cannot deny anyone’s oppositional status. What we need to agree upon is to either jointly enter in the elections or jointly boycott them,” Jovanovic said in a statement for Al Jazeera TV, the People’s Party announced on Oct. 12.

“If we do run in the elections, then it necessary to create a joint ticket on all levels so that voters are clear on the divide between ruling and oppositional [parties],” Jovanovic said and added that he hopes the ongoing negotiations between his party, the FJP and the DP will bear fruit.

“If the opposition puts forth a single presidential candidate that could pose an actual threat to [current] Serbia’s and Serbian Progressive Party President Aleksandar Vucic. The odds [of Vucic losing] are even greater if there is a second round of presidential vote,” Jovanovic concluded.
