Hungarian Foreign MInister Peter Szijjarto has said that his country would veto any attempts to introduce sanctions against Milorad Dodik, the Serb member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Szijjarto stated late on Dec. 19, that the European Union imposed sanctions only through a consensus of member states, adding that it must be clear to everyone that Hungary would not support sanctions against Dodik and would veto any such proposal.

His comment comes in the wake of Germany's new foreign minister, Annalena Baerbock, demanding that Dodik be blacklisted.

"We are worried by such statements [about sanctioning Dodik] because Bosnia-Herzegovina is right around the corner from us. Maintaining stability and peace in the country is our fundamental security interest," Szijjarto wrote on Facebook.

According to him, Berlin is farther away, but not too far for a direct flight to Banjaluka, Republika Srpska's capital. "Fly out and negotiate. Talk to the Serbs. With them. Not about them. Maybe that will help you understand the situation," Szijjarto concluded.
