Serbian President and Progressive party leader Aleksandar Vucic is deliberately delaying the formation of Serbia’s new Cabinet to demonstrate that the country can operate without its executive branch of government as long as it has him, said Democratic Party president Zoran Lutovac.

According to him, the message Vucic is sending by the delay is that “Serbia doesn’t need a parliament, or a government, or a judiciary,” Lutovac told the Nova daily.

“He is sufficient to replace all these institutions. Another reason he hasn’t wanted to conclude this task is that he promised his Western partners that he would align his foreign policy [with theirs] once the new Cabinet – which has the authority to do this – is formed. In other words, he procrastinated in hopes that the war in Ukraine would end before he had to take a stand on the sanctions against Moscow,” Lutovac explained.

Commenting on the fact that the National Assembly of Serbia has not been in session for nearly eight months, Lutovac said that this has had “disastrous consequences.”
