The Hague-based Kosovo Specialist Chambers on Dec. 16 sentenced former Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) officer Salih Mustafa to 26 years in prison for crimes against Albanians in Kosovo in 1999.
According to the verdict, Mustafa, 50, is responsible for severe and cruel crimes against six Albanians detained by the KLA in the village of Zlas, not far from Pristina, in April 1999.
The court found Mustafa, then commander of a unit within the KLA, guilty on three counts of the indictment - arbitrary detention, torture and murder of the detainees in Zlas.
Mustafa was found not guilty of cruel treatment of the detainees.
Mustafa and the KLA members subordinate to him committed crimes against the Albanian civilians they unfoundedly considered "spies," "collaborators" with the Serbian authorities, or political opponents.
