In a Dec. 29 statement, the Belgrade chapter of the oppositional Freedom and Justice Party said that the Serbian Progressive Party, and Belgrade Mayor Aleksandar Sapic in particular, have now resorted to treating Belgrade schoolchildren and their parents “as props” for self-promotion.
According to the oppositional party, Mayor Sapic sent local elementary schools an urgent memo on Dec. 28, demanding the presence of a certain number of first- to fourth-graders at a Dec. 29 event promoting the Progressive’s “For the Serbian People and State” Foundation.
The Freedom and Justice Party maintained that neither teachers nor parents were informed how long the event will last, who the organizers are nor whether the children will be provided a lunch break, and added that “involving children in political staging” is unacceptable.
