The Serbian government said in a press release that it had sent a proposal and rationale to the Serbian president to disband the parliament and call a parliamentary election.

The members of the cabinet also adopted decisions to disband the City of Belgrade Assembly and form the Interim Body of the City of Belgrade, and corresponding decisions affecting another 64 cities and local governments across Serbia.

The proposal to disband the parliament reads that demands for a new, snap parliamentary election had recently been coming from a segment of the public, and that a number of opposition parties had made such a request of the president on Sept. 11.

"Going primarily from this request, the government took the position that executing the election process, one of the most basic tenets of democratic society, would be a good opportunity to re-evaluate the political force of arguments, achievements and plans to date of all factors in the political arena, and to allow the people to express their will freely as to which direction the Republic of Serbia should take," the press release reads.
