Serbia's new commissioner for information of public importance and personal data protection, Milan Marinovic, said on July 29 that he would not implement "anyone's political will."

"We'll see if there will be any pressures or not, I can say anything right now," Marinovic said in a televised interview with the Prva TV, adding that if any occurred, he "won't put up with it."

The new commissioner insisted in the interview that his independence wasn't compromised by the fact that he had been nominated by the Serbian Progressive Party.

"I want to believe that I was nominated because they believed I was objective, professional and independent. I won't put up with any pressure, wherever it might be coming from. It can't be in my personal interest to implement anyone's political will, I don't want or plan to do it, nor did I accept the appointment to do it," Marinovic said.

He said he had accepted the office of the commissioner only to work in the best interest of citizens and the state, not a political group.

In a comment on his predecessor, Rodoljub Sabic, the new commissioner said he had worked by the book, refusing to discuss accusations that Sabic had been involved in politics all along.
