Trade, Tourism and Telecommunications Minister Rasim Ljajic said on Jan. 13 that lowering the electoral threshold could encourage smaller parties to participate in the elections as the three percent limit might give them a chance to win a seat in the parliament, as opposed to the five percent which is currently unreachable for them.
“Whether this will motivate the majority of parties, I cannot say,” Ljajic told the RTS public service when asked if the lowering of the threshold could influence the parties that had announced they will boycott the upcoming vote to change their mind.
Ljajic, who is also the leader of the Social Democratic Party of Serbia, mentioned a few examples of diverse solutions implemented by other countries: in certain EU states the threshold is two percent; some do not even have a threshold, but assign seats in their respective parliaments based on the number of garnered votes, while in Turkey the threshold is 10 percent.
