A ticket put forth by the country’s protesting university students could potentially win a snap parliamentary election since the ruling Serbian Progressive Party’s popularity has been declining since Nov. 1, 2024, when a concrete canopy at the newly-renovated Novi Sad Central Railway Station collapsed and killed 16 people, Professor Dusan Spasojevic of the Belgrade University School of Political Science said on May 26.

Speaking for the Nova daily, Spasojevic claimed the ruling party will never recover the support it had prior to the accident.

“Voting conditions won’t significantly improve ahead of a snap election… and an effort should be made for all representatives of the opposition to unite… I don’t know whether a victory of the university student ticket is certain or probable, but it is definitely possible,” the professor opined.

According to him, the opposition must form a united front in the next elections because “nothing but a joint ticket will guarantee their [political] survival.”
