Serbian Orthodox Church Patriarch Irinej was a pragmatic religious leader focused on maintaining good relations with everyone who could affect the Church’s position. He passed away as a result of the coronavirus infection on Nov. 20, 2020.
Irinej particularly tried to maintain good relations with the Serbian authorities who are the Church’s biggest benefactors. This has often brought him into situations into which he was accused of meddling in politics in favor of the ruling bloc.
