On April 6, dairy farmers dissatisfied with the government’s policies regarding cattle breeding and farming in general will block traffic for six hours in Ravni Gaj and Mrcajevci, at the intersections of main thoroughfares leading to and connecting Kraljevo, Kragujevac and Cacak.

Milija Palamarevic, the president of the Association of Cattle Farmers of Central Serbia, Sumadija and the Morava Valley, told BETA that the protesters want the government to adopt a five-year national plan for the protection and development of local agriculture.

“If the state intends to save its agricultural production, it needs to urgently adopt a five-year national plan for the protection and development of farming. If the state fails to do so, local farming will completely collapse,” Palamarevic warned.

Last week, the Association’s request for a meeting with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Minister of Agriculture Jelena Tanaskovic was granted by Minister Tanaskovic alone, who met with the farmers’ delegation on April 5.

The nearly five-hour meeting failed to yield a concrete agreement, Palamarevic said, which is why the farmers decided to go ahead with the protest announced for April 6.
