People's Movement of Serbia president and MP Miroslav Aleksic said on May 9 that in the worst of electoral conditions the opposition absolutely won in six Belgrade districts, as well that the alternative to boycotting elections was withdrawing from institutions over the next four years.
"For four years we have been going backwards. We cannot boycott elections in Belgrade now, but run in elections in Serbia. The government is fighting to survive because if it loses Belgrade it will lose power. A boycott is direct support for the regime. That would mean surrendering Belgrade to the authorities without a fight," Aleksic said on Insider TV, saying that owing to the opposition's struggle for better conditions several electoral laws had been changed.
"I participate in every competition to win, regardless of the estimates. A series of small but important victories have been achieved by the opposition over the past several years. Citizens are waking up and want changes. Citizens are deciding who will represent Serbia and that is the essence," Aleksic said.
