The ProGlas initiative, gathering independent intellectuals, artists and judicial officers, was against the Jadar Project, a lithium mining and processing project in western Serbia, until conditions had been created for “a free social dialogue on this important social matter,” the initiative said in a statement on June 25.
“Amid a fierce controversy surrounding the Jadar Project, ProGlas states that one of the important prerequisites for successful implementation of a major mining project is citizens’ trust in state institutions responsible for setting standards for environmental protection and safeguard of people’s health and safety, ensuring compliance with such standards and conducting an economic impact analysis,” it is said in the statement.
The initiative added that moving on with the Jadar Project in current circumstances would only lead to deeper divisions in the society and a serious political and social crisis.
